Researchers from the Rushurgent Working Group (RWG) Laboratory presented their studies at the International Symposium on Earth Science and Technology 2025 (CINEST 2025) held at Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan, on November 27-28, 2025. The symposium featured oral and poster presentations highlighting advances in earth science and technology from around the world.
Mr. Kirk Justin Ramos and Dr. Jillian Aira Gabo-Ratio delivered oral presentations, while Mr. Mark Sumaden participated in the poster session. Mr. Ramos presented his work on the geometallurgical characterization of refractory gold ore. Dr. Gabo-Ratio highlighted the geologic characteristics of the Macarthur Black Sand Deposit in Leyte Island. Mr. Sumaden showcased his undergraduate research on the automated characterization of arsenic-bearing minerals from the Lepanto High-Sulfidation Epithermal Deposit in the Mankayan Mineral District.
Out of 147 submitted papers, the symposium recognized 6 Best Conference Papers, 6 Best Presentations, and 4 Best Posters. The paper by Mr. Ramos and Dr. Gabo-Ratio, titled “Unveiling the Geometallurgical Characteristics of Refractory Gold Ore from the Bonanza-Sandy Vein System, Masara Gold District using Mineral Chemistry and Automated Mineralogy,” received the CINEST Award for Best Conference Paper.

Dr. Jillian Aira Gabo-Ratio, together with her graduate advisees Mr. Mark Sumaden and Mr. Kirk Justin Ramos, and Mr. Mark Joshua Novero, a PhD student from Kyushu University, represented the Economic Geology Research Group of the Rushurgent Working Group (RWG) Laboratory at the Asia Africa Mineral and Geothermal Resources Conference 2025 (AA 2025) held in Miyazaki, Japan, on November 22-25, 2025.
Dr. Gabo-Ratio presented her research on mercury mineralization in Santa Lourdes, Palawan. Mr. Ramos reported preliminary results from his thesis, which detected sulfide-hosted invisible gold in refractory ores using elemental mapping, while Mr. Novero showcased initial findings from his dissertation on the Guinaoang Porphyry Cu-Au Deposit in the Mankayan Mineral District.
The one-day conference was attended by researchers from Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Kenya, Algeria, and Djibouti, among others. A three-day field excursion across southern Kyushu followed, featuring visits to Takachiho Gorge, Uchinoura Space Center, Sakurajima Volcano, Kasuga Mine, and Yamakawa Geothermal Power Plant. This event strengthened international collaboration among researchers from Asia and Africa working on mineral and geothermal resources.

Our RWG graduate students proudly showcased their ongoing research alongside fellow scholars and experts from diverse fields. Special congratulations to Mr. Andrew Exequiel S. Tabilog and Mr. Kreyvin Geonathan Andal for presenting their studies through oral presentations. By sharing their work, our graduate students were able to gather valuable insights and foster fruitful discussions and connections with researchers from various fields and universities.
The recently concluded Asia-Oceania Geoscience Society 2025 conference was held in the Marina Bay Sands, Singapore on July 27 to August 1, 2025. Graduate students from the Rushurgent Working Group were able to showcase their ongoing research to experts in their respective fields. Mr. Lyle Andre Arenque did an oral presentation while Mr. Armando Salvador Bambao, Ms. Chae Ann Malipol, Mr. Joshua Godwin Cuevas, Ms. Reign Megino, Mr. Kreyvin Geonathan Andal, and Mr. Kenneth Jan Sangalang presented their studies through posters. They were able to gather valuable insights and foster fruitful discussions and connections with researchers in similar fields of studies from all over the world.
A testament to the grit and passion of our graduate students, a few were given awards for their service as student volunteers of the conference. Ms. Chae Ann Malipol was awarded as one of the “Outstanding Student Volunteers” while Mr. Kreyvin Geonathan Andal and Mr. Kenneth Jan Sangalang were both given the “Above and beyond Excellence Award”.
Graduate students from the Rushurgent Working Group, Mr. Kreyvin Geonathan Andal and Mr. Kenneth Jan Sangalang participated in the 2025 internship program of Akita University, Akita, Japan. This annual internship program is organized by the Graduate School of International Resource Sciences with this year’s theme being “Sustainable Resource Development in 2025”. It aimed to provide graduate students from all around the globe with insights into recent advances in exploration, extraction, utilization, and recycling studies of various resources such as coal, oil, gas, and metallic deposits. The program also highlighted Japanese cultural enrichment through field trips to historical sites, factories, museums, and outcrops.
The internship program was participated by select master’s and doctoral students from the Philippines, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, South Korea, Thailand, Bosnia, and Herzegovina, Indonesia, Myanmar, South Africa, and Botswana.

The Rushurgent Working Group (RWG), led by Dr. Leo Armada, Dr. Betchaida Payot, Dr. Gabriel Theophilus Valera, and Dr. Carla Dimalanta, recently conducted field mapping and geophysical surveys in Marinduque Island. 📍 Fieldwork was conducted in collaboration with students from Geology 170 and 215, providing hands-on learning experiences in geological mapping. 🔬 The teams from ARC3D and SeiScan, research projects funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), also carried out ground gravity, magnetics, and CrowdMag surveys to better understand the island’s subsurface features. 📚 As part of the outreach component, RWG held an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) Campaign titled “Geo-Lecture Series on Geohazards” last June 28, 2025, at Casa Real, Boac. The event was made possible through partnerships with the Marinduque Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) and Marinduque State University (MarSU). 👥 The lecture was attended by participants from MarSU, Marinduque National High School, PDRRMO, PG-ENRO, and other local stakeholders — all united in building geoscience awareness and disaster resilience in the province.
The Rushurgent Working Group (RWG) actively participated in the 8th Philippines-Taiwan Earth Sciences International Conference (PTESIC) held on June 2-3, 2025, at Eastwood Richmonde Hotel, Quezon City. As a member of the original working group, Dr. Carla B. Dimalanta presented the history of the Philippines-Taiwan collaboration, which now spans nearly two decades. Dr. Graciano P. Yumul Jr. presented his ongoing research on alkaline rocks and their associated gold mineralization in Cordon, Isabela, North Luzon. Dr. Leo T. Armada also presented his current study on the integration of new geophysical techniques and datasets to enhance the understanding of the tectonics of Northern Central Philippines. In addition, Dr. Jillian Aira Gabo-Ratio, Dr. Noelynna T. Ramos, Dr. Betchaida D. Payot, and Dr. Carla B. Dimalanta, together with graduate students Kenneth Jan F. Sangalang, Larissa Gabrielle O. Babon, Alliah Linel D.Santos, Armando Salvador M. Bambao, Joshua Godwin Cuevas, and Chae Ann V. Malipol also presented their works during the poster session, contributing to the exchange of ideas with experts from different institutions.
The Rushurgent Working Group (RWG), together with Professor Shu-Kun Hsu from the National Central University and Professor Bor-Shouh Huang from Academia Sinica, visited the Mak-Ban geothermal plant of the Philippine Geothermal Production Company (PGPC) on May 31, 2025. Recognized as the largest steam field in the Philippines and a key contributor to the Luzon power grid, Mak-Ban plays a significant role in the country’s renewable energy portfolio. The visit included technical discussions about the plant’s operations, from exploration to production. The team also toured key facilities, including production wells and separators. This engagement fostered meaningful exchanges of knowledge and ideas, emphasizing the importance of geophysical methods in the sustainable development and management of geothermal resources.
Graduate students Mr. Mark Sumaden and Mr. Kirk Justin Ramos, along with Dr. Jillian Aira S. Gabo-Ratio of the Rushurgent Working Group (RWG), participated in the NEXUS Program held at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan, from May 26 to June 15, 2025. The NEXUS Program is an international research and education initiative supported by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). It focuses on securing mineral resources essential for green technology and sustainable development. The program brings together participants from Japan and three Southeast Asian countries—the Philippines, Cambodia, and Vietnam—to foster regional cooperation in mineral resource studies. During the program, Mr. Mark Sumaden presented his research plans on the Fatima epithermal veins in the Mankayan Mineral District, while Mr. Kirk Justin Ramos shared an overview of his ongoing study on the geometallurgical characteristics of refractory gold ore from the Bonanza–Sandy epithermal vein system in the Masara Gold District. Their research contributes to a deeper understanding of copper and gold ore deposits, which are vital to the development of green and sustainable technologies.
Selected faculty members of the Rushurgent Working Group (RWG), Dr. Betchaida Payot and Dr. Gabriel Theophilus Valera, together with their graduate student advisees, Mr. John Kenneth Badillo and Ms. Mariz Alcancia, recently visited Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse, France. The visit involved a series of advanced laboratory analyses in support of their ongoing research initiatives. This collaborative engagement, made possible through the COOPERATE program of the University of the Philippines System through the Office of International Linkages (UP OIL), is part of a broader effort to strengthen international research partnerships. The experience also provided valuable hands-on training with state-of-the-art analytical facilities, further enhancing the team’s scientific capacity and technical expertise.
Dr. Leo Armada, Mr. Kenneth Sangalang, and Mr. Allen Sipoy of the Rushurgent Working Group (RWG) conducted fieldwork in northern Luzon from May 19 to 28, 2025, alongside a research collaborator from Tongji University, Dr. Mengming Yu, and PhD students from the China University of Geosciences – Beijing. The fieldwork aimed to support ongoing geological studies in the region. The activity concluded with a fruitful discussion between senior RWG members and the visiting researchers at the National Institute of Geological Sciences. The exchange fostered valuable scientific dialogue and opened up opportunities for future collaborative work between the involved institutions.
Dr. Jillian Aira S. Gabo-Ratio and Mr. Kreyvin Geonathan Andal of the Rushurgent Working Group (RWG) conducted fieldwork in the vicinity of Mount Pinatubo, covering areas in Pampanga and Zambales, from May 19 to 26, 2025. This activity was conducted in collaboration with Dr. Massimo Chiaradia, a professor from the University of Geneva in Switzerland, who was accompanied by his Ph.D. students, Mr. Erwan Delfaud and Ms. Eliana Maribel Norona. The fieldwork is part of Dr. Chiaradia’s research project, “Metals And Volatiles in large ERuptive magmatIC Systems (MAVERIC): An Alternative Approach to Understanding Processes of Porphyry Cu Deposit Formation.” The project investigates primary minerals from erupted volcanic materials to gain insights into the magmatic processes occurring beneath volcanoes. These processes are studied as modern analogs to those responsible for the formation of porphyry copper deposits. This international collaboration enhances ongoing efforts to understand volcanic systems and their role in mineralization, contributing to the broader field of economic geology and magmatic studies.
Mr. Nikko Balanial, a graduate student affiliated with the Rushurgent Working Group (RWG), recently visited the National Museum of Nature and Science (NMNS) and the Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ) in Tsukuba, Japan. During the visit, Mr. Balanial conducted geochemical and geochronological analyses in support of his ongoing research. In addition to laboratory work, he engaged in fruitful research discussions with Dr. Kenichiro Tani of NMNS and Dr. Osamu Ishizuka of GSJ, further enriching the scientific exchange. The visit also helped strengthen collaborative ties between the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) and its long-standing Japanese partners. This international research engagement was made possible through the COOPERATE (Continuous Operational and Outcomes-based Partnership for Excellence in Research and Academic Training Enhancement) program of the University of the Philippines System through the Office of International Linkages (UP-OIL).
The DOST-funded project titled “From Source Terranes to Basin Evolution (STroBE): Geologic Evolution and Paleoclimate Studies in the Northern Cagayan Valley Sub-basin” conducted fieldwork in Cagayan Province from 29 March 2025 to 9 April 2025. This activity was part of the project’s research objectives aimed at understanding the source and depositional history of sedimentary rocks in the region. The fieldwork involved geological field mapping, sampling, and identification of potential geotourism sites. It was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), and the project’s Taiwanese counterparts, namely the National Chung Cheng University (NCCU), National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), and National Taiwan University (NTU). The activity fostered meaningful discussions and facilitated the exchange of knowledge among collaborators from all participating institutions. These interactions not only strengthened the scientific collaboration between Filipino and Taiwanese researchers but also provided opportunities to align methodologies and share best practices. The diverse perspectives brought by each group enriched the interpretation of field data and laid the groundwork for future joint studies in the region.
From March 26 to April 3, 2025, our experts, Dr. Carla Dimalanta, Dr. Leo Armada, Mr. Rurik Austria, and Mr. Nathaniel Parcutela, shared their extensive knowledge and expertise in geophysics with the geology students of the Partido State University. Through a series of engaging and in-depth hybrid lectures, the students gained valuable insights into the latest geophysical techniques and their real-world applications. This collaboration marked an exciting opportunity to bridge academic learning with professional experience, inspiring the next generation of geoscientists!

The Rushurgent Working Group (RWG), in collaboration with UPLB-SESAM and Cordillera Exploration Company Inc. (CEXCI), hosted a series of academic and field activities for Prof. Mei-Fu Zhou and Dr. Qi-Liang from the Guiyang Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences from February 24-26, 2025. Highlights included a lecture on scandium resources associated with weathered mafic-ultramafic rocks, visits to the Taal Volcano Observatory and Mt. Makiling. Fieldwork was also conducted in Zambales, including a visit to the CEXCI field office and sampling of pumice from Pinatubo in nearby streams.

Dr. Zhou, 2025 Distinguished Lecturer of the Society of Economic Geologists, delivered an insightful talk at the UP NIGS AVR last February 24, diving deep into the fascinating world of scandium resources. His presentation explored the potential of weathered mafic-ultramafic rocks as a key source for this critical metal. Attendees gained a deeper understanding of the geological processes that make scandium extraction possible, as well as the broader implications for resource exploration and sustainability. A big thank you to Dr. Zhou for sharing his expertise with us!
The Rushurgent Working Group (RWG), in partnership with the National Institute of Geological Sciences (UP-NIGS) and Iuvenis Orbis Geological Fraternity, would like to thank everyone who attended Dr. Manuel Pubellier’s talk on "The Fate of Basins Between Sundaland and the Philippine Sea Plate" at the UP NIGS AVR last January 29, 2025. Dr. Pubellier discussed the tectonic dynamics and interactions between the Philippine Sea Plate and its neighboring plates, highlighting the variations in how convergence obliquity is accommodated within the plate. He also explored the implications of plate docking and closure in the classification of orogens.
It was an incredible session exploring the tectonic dynamics of Southeast Asia. We are excited for more engaging and insightful discussions to come!

The Rushurgent Working Group (RWG) in partnership with the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS), Philippine Association of Geology Students-SEG Student Chapter, and Iuvenis Orbis Geological Franternity extended its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jeffrey Hedenquist and Dr. Keiko Hattori last January 13, 2025 for sharing their expertise through their presentations on the "Geological and Tectonic Setting for High-grade Epithermal Gold Deposits: Potential Areas for Exploration" and "Report Mineralogy, Texture, Morphology + Zonation and Overprints (not "Advanced Argillic"...)".
Their presentations are sure to inspire and inform future exploration endeavors. Here's to a year of learning and discovery!
Ms. Reign Megino and Mr. Kirk Justin Ramos, graduate students from the Rushurgent Working Group (RWG), participated in the Geo-analysis Training Course organized by the Department of Earth Resources Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Kyushu University, Japan, from January 6 to February 8, 2025. The course, funded by the Japan Student Services Organization, focused on advanced geochemical laboratory analyses. During the training, Ms. Megino and Mr. Ramos performed various laboratory techniques including X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and Fluid Inclusion Microthermometry—all critical methods in the exploration and characterization of mineral resources. The students also joined a field excursion to Sakurajima Volcano and the Kushikino Gold Mine to study the volcanic evolution of Sakurajima and the timing of mineralization at the nearby Kushikino deposit. This comprehensive course significantly enhanced their expertise in applying geochemical techniques to mineral resource research, equipping them with valuable skills for their ongoing and future projects.

Dr. Decibel Faustino-Eslava from the School of Environmental Science and Management at the University of the Philippines Los Baños is the third RWG member to receive the prestigious Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos Award. This esteemed honor, which is the nation's highest accolade for educators, soldiers, and police officers, celebrates Dr. Eslava’s significant contributions to environmental geology. Her distinguished work encompasses climate change impacts, disaster risk reduction and management, geologic hazards, paleomagnetism, and tectonics. She now joins the ranks of Dr. Graciano Yumul Jr. and Dr. Carla Dimalanta, both of whom previously received the Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos Award.
Congratulations to Dr. Decibel Faustino-Eslava, Dr. Ma. Victoria Espaldon and Dr. Josefino Comiso, the editors of the book "Rediscovering Laguna de Bay: A vital natural resource in crisis" and its authors for winning the Gintong Aklat Award 2024 in the Science and Technology and Natural and Applied Sciences category. The winners were awarded at the 45th Manila International Book Fair, SMX Convention Center, Pasay City. The book, published by the UP Press, provides a historical background of the lake's degradation and what it will take to rehabilitate it to a desirable and acceptable state. This book is one of the outputs of the EIDR project titled "Ten years after the Millenium Ecosystem Assessment of Laguna de Bay: Towards a sustainable future" which was funded by the UP System through the OVPAA and the DOST. This EIDR project was implemented by SESAM, UP Los Baños and NIGS, UP Diliman.
The Rushurgent Working Group is delighted to share that Dr. Carla B. Dimalanta is this year's Gregorio Y. Zara Awardee for Basic Science Research. This award is given to scientists who made valuable contributions to basic and applied science research by the Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology (PhilAAST).
Dr. Dimalanta is recognized for her dedication and contributions to geoscience research, which include understanding the geologic history and geodynamics of the Philippines, conducting geohazard studies and risk mitigation, and employing geophysical approaches to mineral exploration and resource assessment.

The Rushurgent Working Group (RWG) recently participated in the 37th International Geological Congress in Busan, Korea from August 26-30, 2024. During the congress, the RWG participants presented their current research, focusing on a wide range of topics including marine geophysics, submarine geohazards, economic geology, igneous and metamorphic petrology, and tectonic geomorphology.

Four graduate students from NIGS, being mentored by RWG faculty, recently completed their training under the Contractor Training Program of the International Seabed Authority (ISA). Ms. Elisha Jane Maglalang, Ms. Faye Anne De Leon, Ms. Chelsi Grace Mendoza, and Ms. Kristine Joy Motol were selected by ISA to participate in the training program which began on board the research vessel, FS Sonne, from September to November 2023. During the INDEX2023 expedition within the contract area of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) in the Indian Ocean, Elisha and Faye received training in the preparation, deployment and operation of specialized geophysical equipment. Chelsi and KJ joined the second leg of the expedition which involved the deployment of geological and biological instruments and processing of samples and data onboard the research vessel. From May to June 2024, the 4 participants underwent a month-long post-cruise training at BGR where they analyzed deep-sea rock samples and processed various geophysical data from the INDEX2023 expedition. Eli and Faye are being mentored by Dr. Leo Armada, while Chelsi is being mentored by Dr. Jillian Gabo-Ratio and KJ is under the guidance of Dr. Noelynna Ramos.
Two graduate students, Mr. Nikko Balanial and Mr. John Kenneth Badillo from the Rushurgent Working Group (RWG) were selected to participate in the the Taiwan Experience Education Program, a short-term internship program organized by Taiwanese universities. The internship program was launched by the Ministry of Education of Taiwan in 2015 to provide foreign students with an in-depth learning experience in Taiwan. This year, the RWG graduate students are undertaking their internship at the National Chung Cheng University in Chiayi, Taiwan from June 17 to July 29, 2024. Their internship is hosted by Prof. Yuan-Hsi Lee of NCCU.
The Rushurgent Working Group (RWG) recently participated in the Taiwan-Philippines Summit on Active Volcanoes, Earthquakes, Marine, and Environmental Disasters last June 17-21, 2024 at the National Chung Cheng University in Chiayi, Taiwan. The summit was supported by the National Science Council, the Ministry of Education, and the Center for the Promotion of Earth Sciences to uphold academic exchanges and ties between Taiwan and the Philippines. During the summit, various topics were presented by the RWG participants as well as participants from the University of the Philippines-Los Baños, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Batangas State University, Adamson University, and Mapua University. On the second day of the summit, the participants were divided into two groups to discuss scientific problems of common interest that can be explored to strengthen research collaborations between Taiwan and the Philippines.
A group of professors from the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shandong University in China delivered a series of talks at the NIGS Seminar Room last May 6, 2024. They discussed their current research endeavors, highlighting the use of geochemistry in understanding subduction zone processes, mantle plumes, and eruption events. The GIGCAS and RWG professors, along with their graduate students, are also conducting extensive fieldwork in the western Luzon Arc and Bicol Arc regions. This is part of the ongoing research collaborations between the UP-NIGS and GIGCAS.
The Rushurgent Working Group recently participated in the Sakura Science Exchange Program at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) in Yokohama, Japan, from March 3–9, 2024. During the program, several researchers from JAMSTEC delivered lectures on marine geophysical methods such as multi-beam echo sounding, sub-bottom profiling, gravity and magnetics. The JAMSTEC researchers also provided training exercises on the processing and interpretation of marine geophysical data, specifically multi-channel seismic and ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) data. The group was also introduced to JAMSTEC's cutting-edge technology and facilities, including their research vessels, OBS maintenance facility, and geochemistry laboratory located at their Yokosuka headquarters. The team also toured the Earth Simulator 4 supercomputers and the backup site of DONET (Dense Oceanfloor Network System for Earthquakes and Tsunamis), which is one of Japan's real-time seafloor observatory and monitoring systems. The RWG participants are extremely grateful to Dr. Yasuyuki Nakamura, Dr. Moe Kyaw and Dr. Yasushi Ishihara for facilitating and arranging the activities for the program and to JAMSTEC for accommodating us during the exchange program.
Our paper titled "Bottom simulating reflectors in the Manila Trench forearc and its implications on the occurrence of gas hydrates in the region" is currently featured on the CS website as one of the high-impact studies led by UP scientists in 2023. The list includes other University of the Philippines - Diliman College of Science (UPD-CS) studies that bring innovative solutions to problems and issues faced by Filipinos.

The Rushurgent Working Group hosted a group of Taiwan professors and research collaborators from the National Chung Cheng University, National Cheng Kung University and National Central University last Jan. 23-26, 2024. They gave a series of talks at the National Institute of Geological Sciences to introduce their current research interests and projects. They also gave talks at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Adamson University, Mapua University and the School of Environmental Science and Management at UP Los Banos.

Dr. Jérôme Dyment from the Géosciences Marines, Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris & CNRS, France gave a talk on "Marine magnetics in complex basins - what we learned from the Caribbeans" last October 2, 2023 at the NIGS Multi-Purpose Room. His talk provided insights on interpreting magnetic anomalies and ideas on how they may be applied in the Philippine setting.

Dr. Jillian Aira Gabo-Ratio along with her thesis advisees Ms. Venus Tagle, Mr. Ramuel Ramos, and Mr. Kirk Justin Ramos, participated in the International Conference on Earth Resources and Geo-Environmental Technology 2023 (EraGET) at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia in Phnom Penh on September 21-22, 2023. Dr. Jillian Aira Gabo-Ratio presented her ongoing research on bauxite deposits in Paranas, Samar. On the other hand, Ms. Venus Tagle, Mr. Ramuel Ramos, and Mr. Kirk Ramos presented their undergraduate theses on gold mineralization. Apart from that, Mr. Kirk Ramos received an award for the best paper, while Mr. Ramuel Ramos won the best presentation. Congratulations to all of you!

Dr. Gabriel Theophilus Valera and Mr. John Kenneth Badillo participated in the 2023 Annual Meeting of the Japan Association of Mineralogical Sciences (JAMS 2023). This was held at the Osaka Metropolitan University, Japan last September 14-16, 2023. They presented some of the results of their ongoing research project on the metamorphic rocks of the Romblon Island Group. Dr. Valera's research project is funded by the University of the Philippines through the Balik PhD program implemented by the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
The Rushurgent Working Group (RWG) would like to extend its gratitude to Dr. Frédéric Mouthereau from the Laboratoire Geosciences Environnement, Paul Sabatier University - Toulouse, France, for giving his talk last September 8, 2023, in the NIGS Seminar Room. His recent talk provided insights into the tectono-magmatic development of the continental lithosphere and the early phases of collision zone for Europe and the Mediterranean and how this scenario can be applied in the Taiwan-Philippines geodynamic evolution.
The Rushurgent Working Group successfully conducted the "Geo-Lecture Series: Geology and Geohazards in Kalinga" in Kalinga State University last August 10, 2023. The lecture series was organized through the DOST-funded projects titled "Growth of an Island Arc (GAIA)" and "Marine and Onshore Geophysical Investigations of the Manila subduction zone (MOGI)". The lectures were provided by Dr. Betchaida D. Payot, Dr. Leo T. Armada and Dr. Gabriel Theophilus Valera in which they discussed the geology of Kalinga as well as potential hazards such as earthquakes, landslides and volcanic eruptions. Around 70 participants, including members of the Kalinga LGU and DRR staff, KSU faculty and students, attended the lecture series.
Participants from the Rushurgent Working Group successfully presented their current research at the 20th Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) 2023 held at Suntec City, Singapore last July 31-August 5, 2023. The Rushurgent Working Group is pleased to report the successful completion of the 2023 Philippines-Taiwan marine scientific research (MSR) conducted last March 03 to 24 in offshore Western Luzon. It is part of the broader Volcanoes, Oceans, Typhoons, and Earthquakes (VOTE) Initiative co-funded by the Department of Science and Technology (Philippines) and the National Science and Technology Council (Taiwan). The joint marine expedition aims to map and assess geohazards posed by active geologic structures in the Manila subduction zone.
RWG #TeamGeophysics researchers (Ivan and Berlyn) are joined aboard the R/V Legend by graduate students (Faye and Joshua) from the University of the Philippines - National Institute of Geological Sciences, as well as colleagues from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Jay-R) and National Central University (Taiwan).
