UP World Experts Lecture Series and Society of Economic Geologists International Exchange Lectures of Professor Yasushi Watanabe

The University of the Philippines (UP) World Experts Lecture Series (WELS) and the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) – Philippines Student Chapter sponsored the International Exchange Lecture of Professor Yasushi Watanabe of Akita University on November 20-22, 2019 at the National Institute of Geological Sciences.

On November 20, around 100 undergraduate students from UP, Adamson University and Mapua University attended his lecture on the tectonic controls of porphyry copper deposits. It was also livestreamed for students from the University of Southeastern Philippines and Negros Oriental State University.

On November 21, his lectures on rare earth element mineralization and a revised porphyry deposit model were also well-attended by graduate students and industry practitioners.

On November 22, he gave a keynote talk on ‘Critical Metals for the Future’, which emphasized the increased demand for selected metals that will be used for sustainable technologies. His keynote talk was given during the Earth Science Colloquium organized by the SEG Student Chapter.
